Everybody wants to go home for the holidays, but for one local soldier it means a whole lot more. Tears of joy were shed for Sgt. Chase Matthews and his family because on march 19th 2007 Sgt. Chase Matthews old life ended and a new life began. In march of 2007 while on his first tour of duty in Iraq Sgt. Matthews lost both his legs, since then Sgt. Matthews has had a lot of bad days, but today is a happy day.
While Chase was in the hospital recovering, he, his wife jennifer and their two kids Sarah and Owen reached out to the Homes for Our Troops organization, a non-profit that assists severely injured soldiers by raising donations and coordinating the process of building a home. Sergeant Matthews is the first soldier in kentucky to have a house built and is thrilled to be chosen for the program "We're ready to get in and get everything lined up and situated."
The home is handicap accessible, complete with wide hallways, front loading washer and dryer, and big open floor plan. Chase's father Rudy is a very proud dad. "It's just a dream come true, I'm so happy for them and as thankful as they are for them to have this place."
The family hopes to get their things moved in by wednesday but jennifer says they already feel at home. "Chase got out of his truck and walked into this home and that meant the world to me more than anything, it meant a lot."
