Injured Marine Celebrates New and Improved Home

July 7, 2008

A Western New York Marine said life will be a lot easier thanks to a Massachusetts-based non-profit organization.

Homes for Our Troops recently completed renovations at the Wales home of Mark and Denise Beyers. Both have served as Marines, but it was Mark who lost an arm and a leg while serving in Iraq in 2005.

"Homes for Our Troops just made our house where I could actually live in it. I can actually get around in it, take showers in it," Mark Beyers said.

Over the course of five months, Homes for Our Troops added a wheelchair-friendly master suite complete with a roll-in shower and roll-under countertops.

Mark's family members said the renovations were as much a gift to them as they were to Mark.

"You can see such a relief from his face to be able to do more things for himself," Mark's wife, Denise, said.

"Mark needed--severely needed--what was given to him," his mom, Tricia, added.

Homes for Our Troops relies on monetary and material donations to renovate injured veterans' houses. So far, they have completed 28 home improvement projects across the country.
