Veterans 2006 Day Newsletter
Wednesday, November 22, 2006
By: Staff Writers
Our periodic newsletter highlighting donors, volunteers, and veterans
Dear Supporters,
Just one short year ago on Veterans Day 2005, Homes for Our Troops had completed one home and had five more underway. On this Veterans Day 2006, thanks to your generosity over this past year, we now have over Two Dozen home projects completed or underway across the country. With your support we can keep adding to the number of homes we can build over the next year. The fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan continues, and we know that, sadly, many young men and women continue to suffer severe injuries every day. The past few months have seen an increase in the applications we are receiving from severely injured veterans seeking our assistance.
I recently made another trip to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC and saw many severely injured veterans, many who had lost both legs. This is something most Americans do not see, but I can tell you it has had a profound effect on me, and I ask you for your help. Unfortunately, with limited funds and the amount of veterans being injured, our task grows more difficult, but with your financial help we can do so much more.
After reading about the progress we have made, we hope you will continue to make tax deductible contributions that will enable us to continue helping our severely injured veterans. With your donation we can help even more severely injured men and women who have served our country at a great personal cost. Thank you.

Home Presentation on October 22, 2006!
Douglasville, Georgia
Homes for Our Troops is proud to have provided another handicap accessible home for another military family in need!
Homes for Our Troops Presented a Handicap Accessible Home to Severely Wounded Iraq War Veteran HM3 Joseph Worley and his family in Douglasville, Georgia. The key turnover ceremony was held on October 22, 2006 at 1:00 pm at the Worley home in Douglasville.
HM3 Joe Dan "Doc" Worley, a Navy Corpsman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines in Iraq was wounded on September 17, 2004, while rushing to the aid of a wounded Marine. Joe-Dan lost his left leg to an IED and suffered five gun shot wounds to his right leg, leaving that leg severely damaged.
Homes for Our Troops purchased an existing home in Douglasville and went in and made modifications such as widening all the doorways for wheelchair access, replaced all the flooring, modified the bathroom for handicap accessibility, built a wheelchair ramp at the entrance of the home among other updates to the home.
With the help of local businesses and dedicated volunteers and donations from generous people across the USA, Joseph, his wife and young daughter now have a new home of their own, suited to Joseph’s needs where he and his family can adjust to a new way of life with Joseph’s disabilities.
This home presentation is one of the three to five home presentations Homes for Our Troops expects to make to wounded veterans around the country in 2006.

HFOT and Veterans Featured in New Book!
Blood Brothers: Among the Soldiers of Ward 57 - by Michael Weisskopf
Three men who were the first three veterans assisted by Homes for Our Troops were in Walter Reed Medical Center with Michael Weisskopf, a Time Magazine senior correspondent who lost part of his right arm while in Iraq. This book is a powerful account of Mr. Weisskopf’s time spent in Walter Reed’s Ward 57, the hospital’s amputee ward, with SGT Peter Damon, Cpl Bobby Isaacs, MSG Luis Rodriguez and many others in Ward 57.

Supporter of the Month!
Russ and Carol Gambill of Florida heard about Homes for Our Troops and wanted to help. Carol started printing out our flyers from our website, setting up tables at local events and handing out information to help spread the word about our mission to build and adapt homes for severely wounded veterans.
The Gambills then set out to organize a golf outing. With no experience, they found the place to hold the event, Durand Golf Course, recruited vendors and sponsors from the Melbourne, Florida area and worked tirelessly to get the word out about the tournament.
Local business owners Dave Astolfi and Claudia Deneen of Florida Moving Systems (http://www.flmove.com/) became a major sponsor of the tournament and provided a financial boost for the outing. Dave and Claudia have also pledged to continue to help raise funds and awareness for a local HFOT home building project in Melbourne, FL for SSG Paul Russell Marek. They are even storing the metal structure that will be the frame for Russ's home until we are ready to build.
The Gambill’s golf outing fundraiser raised over $6,000 to help Homes for Our Troops and continue to help us with obtaining donations, recruiting professional volunteers and raising awareness to help further our mission! Thank you Russ and Carol, keep up the good work!

SSG Paul Russell Marek was serving with the 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq. As he rode in a tank near Baghdad on September 16, 2005, his tank was destroyed by an Improvised Explosive Device. Three of his crew members perished in the explosion and Russ lost his right leg and right arm, his right ear and left thumb and suffered a brain injury and severe burns over 20 percent of his body.
After a long and difficult year undergoing many operations, SSG Marek just left the VA hospital and is continuing to recover from his injuries and is starting on his rehabilitation.

Volunteer Spotlight - Terry Curnow of Curnow Builders, Cascade, Montana
Terry Curnow, retired owner of Curnow Builders in Cascade, Montana heard our call for help to build SSG John Bennett a new handicap accessible home and answered loudly! Because of the dedication of Terry to come out of retirement, take on this project at no cost and act as the general contractor as well as solicit donations from his contacts in the local building industry, we hope to have the Bennetts in their new home for the holidays! Thank you Terry and all the volunteers on this home project for SSG Bennett!

Of the over 20,000 Americans wounded in action, the number suffering amputations has been higher than in every war of the previous century except Vietnam. There have also been a large number of traumatic brain injuries, severe burns, blindness and paralysis. Many veterans return home with more than one of these serious injuries. This means an astounding number of men and women need our assistance and support.
Homes for Our Troops has received many applications from these veterans already. They come from all across the country. A young Marine lost his right arm above the shoulder and his right leg below the knee, another Army Sergeant has a wife and child and is now a paraplegic, still another Marine who is a father and husband lost both legs and the sight in his right eye. The list goes on, and there are many severely wounded veterans in need of help, but they must remain on our waiting list until more donations are received.
The recovery and rehabilitation process takes a great emotional and financial toll on these families, and we need to show them we recognize their sacrifice and honor their service.
Please help us provide the much needed assistance these heroes deserve - Donate Today. Donations may be made by mail to Homes for Our Troops, 1 Taunton Green, Taunton, MA 02780, online or by phone at 1-866-7-TROOPS. Monday - Friday 9-5 pm Eastern Standard Time
