Cpl. Tan lost both his legs in August 2005 when an improvised explosive device destroyed the Bradley Fighting Vehicle he was driving during his second tour of duty in Iraq. Since then, Cpl. Tan has been recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, undergoing physical therapy and training on his prostheses. For this project, HFOT partnered with local builder The McKee Group. Our goal is to have Cpl. Tan into his new home in time for Christmas!

I recently made another trip to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC and saw many severely injured veterans, many who had lost both legs. This is something most Americans do not see, but I can tell you it has had a profound effect on me, and I ask you for your help. Unfortunately, with limited funds and the amount of veterans being injured, our task grows more difficult, but with your financial help we can do so much more.
Homes for Our Troops is proud to have provided another handicap accessible home for another military family in need!
Homes for Our Troops purchased an existing home in Douglasville and went in and made modifications such as widening all the doorways for wheelchair access, replaced all the flooring, modified the bathroom for handicap accessibility, built a wheelchair ramp at the entrance of the home among other updates to the home.

Russ and Carol Gambill of Florida heard about Homes for Our Troops and wanted to help. Carol started printing out our flyers from our website, setting up tables at local events and handing out information to help spread the word about our mission to build and adapt homes for severely wounded veterans.

SSG Paul Russell Marek was serving with the 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq. As he rode in a tank near Baghdad on September 16, 2005, his tank was destroyed by an Improvised Explosive Device. Three of his crew members perished in the explosion and Russ lost his right leg and right arm, his right ear and left thumb and suffered a brain injury and severe burns over 20 percent of his body.
After a long and difficult year undergoing many operations, SSG Marek just left the VA hospital and is continuing to recover from his injuries and is starting on his rehabilitation.

The actual home was on display from October 3-5 at the Tampa Convention Center during the METALCON International Trade Show and was presented to Russ and his parents in a touching ceremony at the show. The show also raised $25,000 in donations for Homes for Our Troops.

Volunteer Spotlight - Terry Curnow of Curnow Builders, Cascade, Montana
Terry Curnow, retired owner of Curnow Builders in Cascade, Montana heard our call for help to build SSG John Bennett a new handicap accessible home and answered loudly! Because of the dedication of Terry to come out of retirement, take on this project at no cost and act as the general contractor as well as solicit donations from his contacts in the local building industry, we hope to have the Bennetts in their new home for the holidays!

Of the over 20,000 Americans wounded in action, the number suffering amputations has been higher than in every war of the previous century except Vietnam. There have also been a large number of traumatic brain injuries, severe burns, blindness and paralysis. Many veterans return home with more than one of these serious injuries. This means an astounding number of men and women need our assistance and support.
Homes for Our Troops has received many applications from these veterans already. They come from all across the country. A young Marine lost his right arm above the shoulder and his right leg below the knee, another Army Sergeant has a wife and child and is now a paraplegic, still another Marine who is a father and husband lost both legs and the sight in his right eye. The list goes on, and there are many severely wounded veterans in need of help, but they must remain on our waiting list until more donations are received.
The recovery and rehabilitation process takes a great emotional and financial toll on these families, and we need to show them we recognize their sacrifice and honor their service.
