Local veteran gets a new beginning

A local veteran injured in Iraq was given a new beginning Saturday in the form of a new home for himself and his family.

A local veteran injured in Iraq was given a new beginning Saturday in the form of a new home for himself and his family.

“Since I’ve been home, after my injuries, I’ve had so much support,” Shawn Monroe, a Galveston County veteran from whose legs were seriously injured in mortar fire in Iraq, said.

When Monroe came home, his father-in-law told him about the program Homes for Our Troops, which provides disabled veterans with handicapped-accessible living arrangements.

Monroe applied for the program, and soon after learned he was accepted.

“I was in the process of trying to get a mortgage to buy a home. And when I got the call. I dropped the whole idea. It was such a relief,” he said.

Other members of the community will be asked to assist in the construction of the home, which is expected to take six to seven months.

Retired contractor Mike Magee agreed to build the four-bedroom brick home on land in Santa Fe, Texas in Galveston County.

A land, Monroe says, he was glad to fight for.

“I’ve seen a grateful nation, and it just warms my heart to know that I gave so much for people who really appreciate it,” Monroe said.
