When the Republican National Convention comes to St. Paul in September, they will not only be picking a presidential nominee—they’ll be leaving behind a specially-adapted house for a hometown hero.
"A roadside bomb went off underneath the truck," said Sgt. Marcus Kuboy. "I was ejected out of the vehicle."
Kuboy was injured while on patrol in Fallujah. He has no memory of the blast.
"I broke both of my legs, I broke most of the bones in my right foot, and I broke my back. My arm was broken and I broke my jaw," he told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.
Since his injury one year ago, the Robbinsdale native has been living in a hospital, just thankful to be alive.
Now he’s got another reason to be thankful: A new home to be built just for him.
"Needless to say, it was exciting. It was pretty overwhelming," Kuboy said.
It is a joint effort by the Republican National Convention, the Minnesota Credit Union Network, and Homes for our Troops—a non-profit that has built 25 new houses for injured soldiers.
"Taking care of our men and women in uniform is not a Republican issue, it's not a Democratic issue. It is an American issue," said Matt Burns with the RNC.
Each home has been custom designed for the special needs of each soldier.
"We'll work with Marcus and we'll make sure everything in the house is exactly what he needs," said John Gonsalves, spokesman for Homes for our Troops.
There is still a chance that Kuboy may lose one or both of his legs. But for now, with a new home on the horizon, he can concentrate on his recovery.
"It's pretty much a dream come true. It's a lot of prayers that have been answered," he said.
The location of Kuboy’s new home should be selected soon and the house will be completed by September.
Kuboy said when he’s well enough, he plans to pursue a degree in nursing. |
