New home completed for severely wounded Alabama Marine Work has been completed on a specially built home for an Alabama Marine sergeant who was severely wounded in Iraq last year. The nonprofit organization Homes for Our Troops provided the home in Mobile County for Marine Sgt. Gregory Edwards, who lost his legs and also suffered a shattered left hand when a bomb exploded near him while he was on a foot patrol in Ramadi, in Iraq's Anbar Province. A press conference to announce the home's completion is scheduled at the dwelling in Irvington on Saturday. Edwards is married and has two children. In a press release, Home for Our Troops stated his new home is designed to "provide him with maximum independence." Larry Gill, a Mobile area resident, and a Marine veteran, helped coordinate the building of Edwards' home. In October 2003, Gill suffered a disabling leg wound in Baghdad while on duty with the Alabama Army National Guard's 1165th Military Police Company. Homes for Our Troops, based in Taunton, Mass., was founded in 2004 and has completed 29 homes for severely wounded U.S. service members.
