Homes for Our Troops builds new house in Harlem HARLEM, Ga. — It's a sight to see. Volunteers, troops from Fort Gordon, and contractors lending a hand to a soldier. "He was here all day yesterday. He sat out there in front of the home in a chair, and watched construction from morning till night," Project Manager, Brian Reed said. They're building this house in Harlem for Sgt. Darryl Wallace. He was stationed in Afghanistan in 2007. Darryl's truck broke down, and as he was being towed back to camp, an IED exploded under his truck. Darryl lost both of his legs, had a broken arm, and crushed pelvis. "It's been really hard. It's been difficult. He's overcame a lot of things," Darryl's Wife, Tiffany Wallace said. But things will soon be a little easier. This construction is part of Homes For Our Troops. They build specially adapted homes for severely injured veterans that have returned from Afghanistan and Iraq. Since 2004, Homes For Our Troops has built 42 homes across the country, from Georgia to California, and Michigan to Texas. Darryl's home will have 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, wider hallways and hard wood floors. "I see a home. Somewhere where we can live and my husband can get around," Wallace said. It's been a long road for the Wallace family, but soon they will have a new home. "There's no other feeling like it, to be able to help someone who has sacrificed so much for you," Reed said.
