New Home For Injured Soldier

Harlem, GA — It’s a brand new home for injured army Sergeant Darryl Wallace. Several soldiers from Fort Gordon volunteered to help built this house from the ground up.

Joseph Wood: "It’s just hard to believe that people would give up their time to do something like this."

Sergeant Wallace was injured in 2007 after his vehicle was blown apart by an IED, in Afghanistan. As a result, he lost both legs, broke an arm and suffered a crushed pelvis along with other internal injuries.

Joseph Wood: "He had a lot of rehab to go through, he had a lot of physical problems, he had a lot of mental problems..."

Through "Homes For Our Troops" Sergeant Wallace will be able to get around easier in his new home, which was built with his needs in mind. Since the attack, Wallace has been in a wheelchair. About 60 volunteers have been working on the house. Crews say in just three days the entire outside of the house was up.

Jafo Frazier, Volunteer: "It’s a lot of soldiers that the army needs to help them. We need to give back to them."

Joseph Wood: "But I think that having this house built for him and not having to worry about the condition that his family its kind of put it in a better way."

Wood says it’s been a serious struggle for the pass two years but his nephew has been able to pull through.

Joseph Wood: "His faith in God is what helped him mentally and that the love of friends and family and people like homes for our troops is getting him through this physically."
