Injured Navy Officer to Get New Home HOUSTON — He suffered crippling injuries while serving his country. Well, on Thursday, his community turned out to serve him. Heads bent against the wind and resolve in place, these volunteers braved the weather, determined to start the latest Homes for Our Troops project. This will be home to Navy Petty Officer Anthony Thompson, wife Ivonne and 2-year-old son AJ. Anthony had just started his second deployment to Iraq when Ivonne got a phone call that a dump truck with loaded with 3,000 pounds of explosives detonated under his post station. Two and a half years later, Anthony remains at a rehab hospital in New Jersey. The injuries to his spinal cord and brain have left him unable to communicate verbally and confined to a wheelchair, but, he is improving every day. Luis Davila Toro will be the Thompsons’ next door neighbor. As a former marine, he enlisted more than 50 coworkers with U.S. Customs and Border Enforcement--almost all of them veterans eager to help out at the job site. Anthony will be able access every single room in this house in his wheelchair. Work here should be complete in about 6 months. Then Ivonne says she will bring Anthony home.
