SGT Anthony Verra

Stella, NC

Army Sergeant Anthony Verra was on his 2nd deployment when he lost both of his legs after stepping on an IED in Arghandab, Afghanistan on September 22, 2010. Called in to take pictures documenting the situation at a compound that had just been cleared of five IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices), SGT Verra stepped on an unidentified IED; the blast traumatically amputating his legs and hurling him through the air. Airlifted to Kandahar, and then to Bagram, SGT Verra would travel through Landstuhl, Germany before arriving at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC four days after the blast that nearly claimed his life. Nearly sixty surgeries later, SGT Verra continues his recovery in Bethesda, Maryland at the newly renamed Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
