Cpl Visnu Gonzalez
Hillsdale, NJ
On April 21st, 2004, while serving in Iraq, Corporal Visnu Gonzalez was shot by a sniper, severing his spinal cord in the C-6, C-7 level. He also received a shot to his left subclavian artery that caused severe bleeding and near death. Despite surgery to stabilize his vertebra, today, Cpl Gonzalez remains paralyzed from the upper chest down.
Homes for Our Troops has built Cpl Gonzalez a LEED Platinum house that is specially adapted to his needs. We are proud to say this is the first home in the nation to achieve the EPA’s Energy Star Climate Choice Tier 3 certification in addition to receiving 95 points under LEED for Homes. Thank you to the many volunteers and donors who participated in this project!
We wish Cpl Gonzalez, his mother Maria and sister Natalia many years of happiness in their new home!

Project Updates!
The key ceremony was an awesome day for Visnu and family. Thank you to all the contractors and members of the community who assisted on this project. I am quite confident that this is one we will all remember for some time.
We are proud to say that this home received LEED Platinum status and was the first in New Jersey to do so!
This is a LEED certified home build thanks to funding from the Sierra Club Foundation. Green features will include solar panels and a geothermal heating system to provide maximum energy efficiency. LEED will not certify a home unless it is energy efficient, water-smart, built from non-toxic materials and it respects the environment in which it’s built.
