Thrown 25 yards from the vehicle, Cpl. Stengel was knocked unconscious and suffering serious injuries. The blast killed two of the Marines instantly and severely injured the survivors. Treated first at a local hospital, Cpl. Stengel was airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany before being transported to the National Naval Medical Center at Bethesda where he remained in a medically induced coma for two months. Six months after arriving in Bethesda, Jeremy was transferred to Walter Reed where he received extensive treatment.

Cpl. Stengel plays wheelchair basketball and is an avid scuba diver. He is a member of VFW post in his hometown, Waterford, WI. Just tell the bank associate you want to make a deposit into the account titled "Homes for Our Troops".

Cpl. Stengel says there are days when he cannot wear his leg and he depends on his wheelchair to get around, "It will be great to have a house that I can fully access... a specially adapted home built by Homes for Our Troops will allow me to be independent in my own home." Jeremy is grateful for those who are helping make his life a little easier and transfers any recognition of heroism to those who are doing so... "For a group of people to do this for returning injured veterans...YOU are true Americans. Thank you."
