Army CPL Joshua Stein was left a double amputee with severe arm injuries after an IED explosion in Taji, Iraq, on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006. The driver of a Bradley Fighting Vehicle on a patrol mission, an IED blast tore through the vehicle’s engine and then through his legs, causing immediate amputations.

Somehow continuing to control the Bradley with two broken arms and opening the rear hatch of the vehicle, allowing his team to exit, he then opened his own hatch as well, letting his team know that he had been hit before falling unconscious. Within minutes he was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to Balad, Iraq and then to Landstuhl in Germany before finally arriving at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. Waking a month later, CPL Stein learned the severity of his injuries and began to focus on his recovery and his future.

CPL Stein enjoys spending time with his wife Nicole and their three young daughters. He enjoys working on his classic truck, sled hockey, fishing, riding ATV’s and off-roading. He is looking forward to being a dad to his daughters and living in a specially adapted home that will allow him to feel "normal" again while not having to worry about fitting into a room, or getting something for himself.

He knows that will be a great improvement to his self- esteem. He would like to thank everyone who is remembering those who serve, stating, "People who care enough to do something out of gratitude and selflessness is a blessing upon them. This country wouldn’t be what it is without Americans like you! I am proud to be an American and to have fought for this beautiful land."
