SGT Recendez, who had suffered immediate amputations of both of his legs, was pulled from the vehicle and treated on the side of the road as he awaited medevac to the Green Zone. Treated first in the local hospital he was later airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany and later to Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he remained for more than 11 months.

SGT Recendez is an active outdoorsman who enjoys Mountain biking, road cycling and kayaking. He is a Fine Arts student who enjoys ceramics and pottery and aspires to own his own workshop and studio upon completing his education.

SGT Recendez is looking forward to living in his specially adapted home where he says, "Rather than compromising my ability to adapt to my living environment, my environment will adapt to me. Thank you to Homes for Our Troops and their donors for empowering injured service members and showing support to individuals like me... whatever your opinions on this conflict may be your support is profoundly appreciated."
