SSG Michael Downing
Middleboro, MA
Army SSG Michael Downing was on his second deployment when he was left a double amputee after an IED explosion in Afghanistan in September 2008. The force of the blast blew SSG Downing from the truck he was in, throwing him into enemy territory, unprotected. Quick action by patrol leaders secured the area, all the while exchanging small arms fire as the medics worked to aid the wounded.
SSG Downing, after calling out to each of his team members to check on their conditions, suddenly realized he had irreversible damage to both of his legs and a severely injured arm as well. He was placed on the hood of a truck and rolled to a more secure area. Transported first to Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, he was later airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany and finally to Walter Reed where he remains at this time.
SSG Downing enjoys spending time with his wife Dawnalee and their four children. Before his injuries he played golf and hockey and was a softball coach for his daughter's team. A fan of big trucks and motorcycles, he hopes to one day be able to work on his own vehicles once again. He enjoys yard work and landscaping and is involved with the ELKS and VFW in his hometown.
Michael's goal is to be able to walk again. He would like to be able to play with his children and would love to be able to slow dance with his wife... something he could not do after their wedding ceremony held at his bedside at Walter Reed. SSG Downing would like to return to school and pursue a Business degree and eventually work in the field of helping injured service members.
Homes for Our Troops is proud to have presented this beautiful home to Michael and Dawnalee on February 26, 2010. A home that they can call their own and that will allow him to move freely and become more independent.
