SGT Ryan Newell
Marion County, KS
Army SGT Ryan Newell was deployed to Afghanistan when he was left a double amputee after an IED explosion blew him out of his vehicle’s gunner’s turret in January 2009. After being stabilized and with flight conditions improved, SGT Newell was airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany. He was later airlifted to Walter Reed, where he spent nearly a year undergoing treatment and rehabilitation. He has recently returned to Kansas to continue his therapies closer to home.
SGT Newell enjoys hunting, boating, golfing and photography. He would like to pursue a college education, possibly working in the field of prosthetics. SGT Newell would also like to volunteer for organizations that assist wounded veterans. Ryan and his wife, Carrie have four children ages 3-11. He looks forward to living in a barrier-free home where he can interact with his children and he and his family can focus on his recovery and their future.
