Army SPC Justin Perez-Gorda was on his first deployment when he became a paraplegic and suffered a traumatic brain injury, as the result of an IED explosion in Memlah, Afghanistan on January 5, 2011. The driver of a Mine resistant Ambush Protected All Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV), SPC Perez-Gorda and his team were returning from a reconnaissance mission when they came under fire near a school.
Daniel Peterson

While on his second deployment, Marine Special Forces, Lance Corporal Daniel Peterson was left a double amputee after an explosion in the Southern Helmand Province of Afghanistan on July 24, 2010. Returning from a classified mission, the Special Forces Team was making their way along a tree line while returning to base when a bomb exploded, hurling LCpl Peterson more than ten feet into the air. Landing in the crater created by the explosion, Daniel immediately knew he was seriously injured.

Marine Staff Sergeant Jack Pierce was on his third deployment when he was left paralyzed after his vehicle drove over a 300 pound bomb in Helmand Province, Afghanistan on January 9th, 2010. The last of a six vehicle convoy on the main service road on a resupply mission, the blast tossed the vehicle 35 feet, where it came to rest on its roof. SSgt. Pierce received multiple injuries including a broken knee, broken ribs, scapulas, wrist, and vertebrae’s as well as a crushed spine resulting in T5 paraplegia; paralysis from the chest down.
Craig Andrade

Army SPC Craig Andrade was on his first deployment in February 2005 when an IED blast near Baghdad, Iraq left him with severe injuries including the loss of both legs above the knees and a burst eardrum. While on a dismounted patrol mission with his platoon, an IED hidden in the trunk of a tree was detonated, injuring everyone in SPC Andrade’s squad and killing his friend who was standing next to him.
Daniel Robles

Army MSG Daniel Robles was on his third deployment in April 2006 when he lost both of his legs in an IED attack near Baghdad, Iraq. As the Mortar Platoon Sergeant, MSG Robles was leading a mission to investigate a possible weapons cache site when his vehicle was hit by the IED. Seeing the devastation to his legs and feet, he knew he had been seriously injured.

Army SSG Nicholas McCoy was on his second deployment in December 2006 when an IED blast near Iskandariyah, Iraq caused injuries so severe; it required the amputations of both of his legs. While on a dismounted patrol, an IED hidden in a pile of trash was detonated, injuring 5 soldiers and killing one instantly. Thrown into the air, SSG McCoy was left unconscious after the blast with a shattered right leg and broken hip, and severely injured left leg.
Charles Armstead

Army SFC Charles Armstead was on his third deployment when he suffered serious injuries. While at his outpost in Hamman Al Alil, Iraq on May 2, 2009, SFC Armstead did not know that an Iraqi insurgent had already killed two soldiers while infiltrating the outpost and had severely wounded the gate guard when he went to investigate a noise coming from the gate area. As reached the scene he was shot in the stomach leaving him with internal injuries and shattering his right hip, while also causing extensive nerve and spinal damage.
Adrian Garcia

Army SPC Adrian Garcia was only three weeks into his first deployment when he was left a double amputee after a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) attack in Ramadi, Iraq in March 2007. While on a routine patrol, SPC Garcia was manning the turret of an up-armored HUMMVEE when the RPG attack shattered both of his legs.

Marine Corporal Daniel Gasca was left a double amputee after an IED explosion in Fallujah, Iraq in September 2008. Cpl Gasca was driving an up-armored HUMVEE when it was hit by a control detonated IED. Cpl Gasca suffering from spinal fractures, broken ribs, a ruptured spleen, and leg injuries so severe that both of his legs required amputation.

Naval Petty Officer Anthony Thompson was on his second deployment to Iraq with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines Fox Company 3rd Platoon near Fallujah, when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive under an overpass where Thompson and his Marines had taken up post on April 20, 2007. During recovery efforts Anthony was found unresponsive on a pile of concrete rubble.

Army CPL Joshua Stein was left a double amputee with severe arm injuries after an IED explosion in Taji, Iraq, on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006. The driver of a Bradley Fighting Vehicle on a patrol mission, an IED blast tore through the vehicle’s engine and then through his legs, causing immediate amputations.

Marine Cpl Jose "Ivan" Perez was left with multiple injuries after an IED explosion in Fallujah, Iraq, on February 27, 2007. Already suffering from TBI from a previous explosion, Cpl Perez lost part of a finger on his left hand, and received a spinal cord injury leaving him with Paraplegic Cauda Equina Syndrome which requires him to spend up to 95% of his time in a wheelchair.

Marine Corporal Neil Frustaglio was left severely burned and a double amputee after two IED explosions in Ar Ramadi, Iraq in December 2005. Cpl Frustaglio, the vehicle commander, was quick to ready his team to assist the casualties of an IED blast that occurred in the vehicle behind his HUMVEE. When a second IED detonated, Cpl Frustaglio was thrown face down into the dirt with diesel fuel igniting into flames all around him.

Army SGT Nathan Hunt lost both of his legs while on a routine Route Clearance Mission in Baghdad, Iraq in May 2008. Escorting a convoy while searching for roadside bombs, SGT Hunt saw a flash as a bomb exploded hurtling him across his vehicle. SGT Hunt aided his colleagues as they worked to apply tourniquets to his legs which had been blown off by the explosion.

Specialist Brett Wolf was serving in Iraq with the 25th Infantry when he was severely injured on September 11, 2007. Brett was injured while driving the lead vehicle, a minesweeper, in South Kirkuk, Iraq. The sweeper struck a large bomb, flipped over and injured several of the personnel on board.

On the evening of August 28 2007, a 127 mm rocket was lobbed into the U.S. military base in Kirkuk, Iraq, where Axtell was serving as part of the 977th MP company. Axtell went to check the mail for his squadron. He was just opening the door to the supply room when the rocket landed approximately 4 feet behind him.
